Patrick Willis Wins The Butkus

Posted by Kevin on December 8, 2006

Patrick Willis, LB from Ole Miss, became the first player from a Mississippi school, and second from the SEC, to win the Butkus award for the best linebacker in the country. Alabama’s Derrick Thomas won the award in 1988.

Willis lead the SEC in tackles (137) for the second straight season. He ranked sixth in the nation in tackles, was third in solo tackles, and racked up 10 or more tackles in 11 of Ole Miss’ 12 games this season.

Last week, Willis brought home the Conerly Trophy, given annually to the top college football player in Mississippi. Willis was also named the SEC’s defensive player of the year by the league’s coaches as well as the media. He was also named as a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is presented to the best defensive player in the country.

Although he plays for those damned Rebels, it’s nice to see a player from a Mississippi school rake in these type of honors. I’m also elated that Willis won’t be terrorizing my beloved Bulldogs any longer.

Go to Hell Ole Miss.
