Gator Bait!!! (part deux)

Posted by Kevin on April 3, 2007

gatorsFlorida’s dominating win over Ohio State last night made history on a number of fronts.

  • They were the first to win back-to-back titles with the same starting five.
  • First NCAA program to hold both the football and men’s basketball title in the same year.
  • First time the same two teams have met for the football and men’s basketball title in the same year.

Once Florida got rolling, you could just feel the end coming.  They built a lead and every time Ohio State got a block or a fast break to perhaps give them a much needed spark, Florida had an answer.  Just as their football counterparts did, the Gators men’s basketball team dismantled Ohio State and dominated.

This is the first men’s basketball repeat champion since Duke in 1991-92, and only the second repeat champion since UCLA’s dynasty of the 60’s/70’s.   Just imagine what could happen next year if these Gator underclassmen decided to come back for one final year.  Noah, Brewer, Horford, and Green are all juniors, and the team is loaded with talent to support them for a three-peat.  But it won’t happen.  Saying no to the NBA once had to be tough to do.  Saying it again would be down right crazy.

But perhaps the biggest recruiting job at Florida right now isn’t trying to keep underclassmen from jumping to the NBA early.  Instead, the biggest recruiting job belongs to Athletic Director Jeremy Foley in trying to keep Billy Donovan in Gainesville because Kentucky will surely be calling, as may the NBA.
