So We Beat Tulane…

Posted by Kevin on September 10, 2007

In week 1 State faced off with arguably the best team in college football and it showed. In week 2 we faced a Tulane team far, far down the talent tree…. and it showed. Against LSU we saw the offense struggle mightily and the the defense show that it can hang with the big boys. Against Tulane we saw the offense finally show signs of life and a second half defensive performance reminiscent of the glory days under Joe Lee Dunn.

Some notes from the Tulane game:

  • Tulane gained a TOTAL of 6 yards in the entire second half.  Defense, anyone?
  • State has lost both coin tosses in the early 2007 season. State won only two coin tosses in 2006.
  • Tulane’s 67 yard pass completion in the 2nd quarter was the longest pass play allowed by State’s defense since 2004.
  • State’s 489 yards of total offense was the most since 2002.
  • State converted 10 third down conversions; the most since 2002.
  • For the second consecutive week, State completed passes to TEN different receivers.
  • Henig passed for 200+ yards for the fourth time in his State career. He has started 18 games.

What will we see this weekend against an Auburn team that has struggled offensively so far? My guess is we’ll see much of the same from our defense. I don’t expect Auburn to put up more than 17-20 points. The big question mark is still our offense. Which Michael Henig will show up? I’m skeptical. My score prediction: Auburn 20 – State 6
