So We’re 3-1…. But Are We Really Any Better?

Posted by Kevin on September 24, 2007

Well, we got the 200+ yard rushing game like I wanted, but not the way I would have preferred.  Neither Anthony Dixon, nor Christian Ducre rushed for 100+ yards.

Wesley Carroll started as I predicted, but Josh Riddell seems to have had the better day, going 8 for 11 with a touchdown.  The passing game did show some improvement over previous weeks in terms of the number of passes attempted, but I can’t shake the feeling that they still aren’t efficient enough through the air to win consistently.

The first half went very well, as State dominated Garner-Webb up and down the field for a 28-0 halftime lead.  It’s what happened in the second half that concerns me.  I’m sure the coaches will play it off as wanting to rest key players and get more players game experience, but to be outscored 15-3 by a I-AA team and come across as just wanting to end the game bothers me.  I agree with playing more backups to get them playing time, but don’t change the game strategy.  The defense went absolutely soft in the second half and the offense became one dimensional again.

Game Notes:

  • For the third straight week, MSU’s defense ended the opponent’s opening drive with an interception return for a touchdown.
  • State won their 3rd straight game for the first time since 2000.  It is also the first time State has been 3-1 since 2000.
  • With his two sacks in the game, Titus Brown, has moved into 8th place on the school’s all-time sack list.

But perhaps the most important note of all….
Mississippi State’s defense has scored more points thus far than Notre Dame’s offense.  That should make any Notre Dame hater smile.
