Beat Those Cocks

Posted by Kevin on September 27, 2007

South Carolina has won four straight over MSU. They’ve outscored State 88-43 in those games, including two shutouts.

They’re ranked 16th in the nation and have Captain Visor…. Steve Spurrier at the helm.

They’re 14 point favorites at home against a 3-1 Mississippi State team that hasn’t won four games since going 8-4 in 2000.

Many factors point to an easy South Carolina win. But as Lee Corso might say, not so fast my friend!

Mississippi State will win this game Saturday.

South Carolina’s offense is pretty vanilla, and it’s been struggling to meet Spurrier’s expectations. South Carolina will be starting true freshman Dion Lecorn at receiver, who has not caught a pass so far this season. He’s talented, but he’s a freshman. Maybe we can catch him coming over the middle early in the game and have Derek Pegues introduce himself in true safety style. Redshirt freshman Chris Smelley will start at quarterback in place of fifth-year senior Blake Mitchell, although I expect we’ll see Mitchell anyway. Spurrier is also juggling his offensive line a bit, starting two backups against MSU. It also helps that defensive star Jasper Brinkley is out.

But South Carolina is ranked 16th in the country. Why do I think State will be able to go on the road in a hostile environment and win? Simple. Our ground game is good enough to eat up valuable clock time.

South Carolina has given up more than 200 yards a game on the ground through four games. Granted, their pass defense is 2nd in the country, but opponents have only attempted 105 passes in four games. I believe MSU’s offensive line will control the line of scrimmage and give Anthony Dixon and Christian Ducre enough space to get enough yardage to keep the ground game effective. My only concern here is that when South Carolina commits nine players to stopping the run, will MSU’s coaching staff adjust and have audible hot routes and play action passes ready? If we can handle that situation, I think it will be the key to winning the game.

Defensively, I expect South Carolina to move the ball but for State’s defense to stiffen when it matters most. Ellis Johnson needs to call blitzes early and get after Smelley right out of the gate. Hit him hard and make him paranoid in the pocket. A turnover or two putting our offense in a short field situation would also do wonders to help the cause.

My prediction: Mississippi State 20 | South Carolina 16

No, I’m not on the Croom bandwagon all of a sudden.  I still do not care for him as our coach, and I absolutely hate his offensive mindset.  But I am drinking the Maroon koolaid!
