0-6-1.  That is Mississippi State’s football record in the state of Arkansas.  State has sent a few good teams to play the Hogs and have come up empty each time.  The Bulldogs have won two big SEC road games this year in beating Auburn at Auburn for the first time since 1999 and Kentucky in Lexington for the first time since 2000.  Last year, State beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa for the first time since 1997.

I’m scared of Arkansas, especially on the road.  The dynamic duo of McFadden and Jones have both rushed for over 1,000 yards on the season.  McFadden has 12 rushing touchdowns; Jones has 11.  State’s defense is pretty good against the run, but Arkansas is not your average rushing team.  They have a power game, but they also have an entire playbook of gimmick plays that give defenses fits.  State hasn’t had many trick plays run against them this season which scares me even more.

The magnitude of this game also bothers me.  There was a great deal of hype leading up to the Alabama game.  While the defense played great, the offense looked flat and Wesley Carroll finally looked like a true freshman at quarterback.  I think the hype got to him.  As big as the Alabama game was for State, the Arkansas game now means so much more.  At 6 wins we’re bowl eligible, but are not guaranteed anything.  A win over Arkansas would guarantee the first bowl season for the Bulldogs since 2000 and generate serious discussion for Croom being the SEC Coach of the Year.

It’s going to take another A+ effort from everyone wearing maroon this weekend, but Arkansas is beatable.  Keep McFadden off the field!
